As many of you know, I work with animals, mostly dogs. I just found out this morning that a former client surrendered their dogs to the local shelter. It’s a kill shelter. The young one was possibly a pure bred beagle and was immediately picked up by a rescue group. The older one (about 9 years) is a pit lab mix. Basically no chance of getting adopted. I’ve been spreading the word since I found out. I’ve had a couple people express some mild interest but I haven’t gotten my hopes up.
Out of the two, I would’ve taken the older one without even thinking. She just wants belly rubs and a walk. Young hounds are a pain.
It’s a high kill rate shelter because so many people dump their dogs. The shelter is full and owner surrenders get put down first. So, if you’re looking for a sweet, loving, older mutt and live in Georgia, hit me up. Or if you’re willing to drive. And since they’re no longer a client, I can post pictures.

Poor thing. I just can’t understand how people can do that.

Old, lazy dogs are best dogs.

I hate when people carelessly discard pets. I get that sometimes situations prevent people from keeping pets, but it’s not that hard to use your circle of friends or family to help find a new home for an animal you you can’t keep.
Yet all too often it’s something dumb like, “we’re moving and we don’t want to go to the effort to find an apartment that allows pets, so we’ll wait until the last possible moment before moving to bring the pet to the shelter.” If you know you have to move and can’t take your pet, see who might want your pet! Post it on facebook! Send pictures around to people at work! Somebody will probably want to take the pet!
Shit, I just paid a $850 dental bill for one of my cats. We would never give them up.
Is there any way you can get a rescue organization to pick up the dog, or pick it up yourself?

She’s always been good with other dogs with me. She was attacked by a lab one time when she was off leash with former owners and went to greet them. She’s been a little shy since. Lived with another dog and cat. Good with kids too

It’s awful when animals with so much life left in them get put down just because someone couldn’t look after them.

Wish you were closer (Washington, DC) or I’d take grandma off your hands. About the same age as mine.

Any way the shelter will let you foster the dog so she’s not on the kill list? That way maybe you’ve got some more time to reach out to your own contacts until a new home can be found.

People suck. I don’t work in a rescue myself, but I know quite a few people that do a lot for rescues or foster.
A couple weeks back one of the shelters a friend works at had 82 intakes. In one day. And most of those were owner surrenders, for really asinine reasons. Like “I’m going on a vacation”. I’m sorry, but fuck you. You took on a responsibility to this animal. You can’t just throw them away when they’re no longer convenient to your lifestyle. Do you do that with a child? No, you don’t (okay, I’m sure there’s been a few whackjobs that have done that).
Or the we just got a puppy and the old dog doesn’t like it, so we are getting rid of the old dog. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to adopt. Although those people will just buy another dog and help perpetuate the problem even more.
I’d love to help this pup, but I’m in Jersey and already have four dogs of my own.

I know. Supposedly they moved. That’s the reason they put according to my source. I just spent almost $5k on my dog so I know what you mean. I can’t take her in because of my dogs. Worst case scenario I could figure something out for a day or two but I couldn’t long term foster/adopt. She has sponsorship money for anyone who could foster. Problem is, everyone is either full or they won’t take on a long term foster. Because of her age and breed she’s very undesirable. In the time she would be fostered there could be several other dogs rehomed. That’s how they look at that stuff.

My wife and I found a dog in the middle of a busy intersection. The next day we took her to the local animal shelter when they opened to check her for a chip. They seemed like they really did not want us to surrender the dog to them.
We saw the dog about a year later with her adoptive family at local Scottish festival. That made us happy.

Maybe Lus’sLabs could help? That’s where we got our chocolate lab.

I can’t because of my dogs. Because of her age and breed she’d likely be a long term foster.

Okay cool, I’m checking with my wife to see if her friends in Georgia are in need of a pupper. I’m just too far away myself.

College town. People adopt dogs and then their apartment won’t allow it. People move back home and parents won’t allow a dog. The puppy thing you mentioned. The list goes on. Breaks my heart. Notice how Lena Dunham gave up her dog after getting two puppies?

Older dogs are so sweet. And this one’s got the intelligence and empathy of a lab with the affection of a pitbull, pretty good combination.

Cool. I went by and visited her earlier. I was told she was anxious/sad so I thought she’d enjoy seeing a familiar face. She was very happy. On my way out they told me a rescue group would be picking her up tonight but I just found out that didn’t happen so I don’t know what that means in the long run.
